Are You Wearing a Mask? (Deeper)

A guest post by Marina from the Church Girl Sisterhood.

Have you ever felt like you had to wear a mask to be accepted? I have. We live in a world where perfection is often expected—or at least the appearance of perfection. But especially as Christians, we should understand that this is not our way.

Dane Ortlund writes in his book Deeper (chapter 6) about the importance of honesty and highlights 1 John 1:7:

„But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.“

Honesty—true, open confession—is a step into the light. This doesn’t just mean being honest before God; it also involves being open with other Christians. Yes, that can sound scary at first. Who likes to share their sins with others?

But here’s the truth: honesty brings healing and leads to fellowship (see James 5:16). This doesn’t mean you have to air all your “dirty laundry” to every Christian you meet. It’s about letting go of fear and finding trustworthy individuals—people with whom you can share your true self.

Honesty leads to freedom, growth, and deeper fellowship—with God and with other Christians. So, take the step! Trust the Gospel. Talk to a friend about what’s weighing on your heart. God created us for community, not isolation.

I hope you experience the liberating power of walking in the light and that your heart grows in the process.

Let’s be honest. Together.

Love,
Marina
